Pinot Grigio

Alto Adige DOC

If your familiarity with Pinot Grigio is light, boring, insipid wine, think again. Known throughout the world for its complex, ripe, mineral-driven style of Pinot Grigio, Alto Adige is truly the world-wide benchmark in its production of Pinot Grigio.

Rottensteiner strives to not only produce some of the world's best Pinot Grigio, but to produce it in a completely unmanipulated style with minimal intervention, allowing the grape and terroir to shine.

Grown in vineyards surrounding the capital city of Bolzano, rich in Alto Adige's famous red rocky volcanic soil known as "porphyry", with elevations ranging from 750 to nearly 2000 feet, much higher than most other producers in the area. After a temperature controlled fermentation the wine is left to age in stainless steel tanks. The wine is free from any malolactic fermentation, acidification or any other form of manipulation.

Despite Northern Italy's cold temperatures in the surrounding mountains, the vineyards around Bolzano share the same summertime temperatures of Palermo, Sicily! The wines' acidity & overall structure is formed mostly by the area's drastic diurnal temperature shifts. Expect a wine with ripe fruit, crisp acidity, and a much longer finish than you may be used to with Pinot Grigio.

Müller Thurgau

Alto Adige DOC

We wouldn't have a proper representation of Alto Adige without a German grape varietal. Afterall, roughly 70% of Alto Adige's population speaks German and the region was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until 1919. You didn't think the name Rottensteiner was Italian, did you?

Despite Müller Thurgau being a Germanic varietal, most would agree that it's best suited to be grown and produced here in Alto Adige. This unusual grape was actually created in Germany in the late 1800s by a Swiss botanist named Hermann Müller.

Similar to the Pinot Grigio of Rottensteiner, these grapes are grown in vineyards surrounding the capital city of Bolzano with similar soils, elevation, and exposure. Tenuta Rottensteiner prefers higher elevations for this grape to lift the typical medium acidity of  Müller Thurgau. After a temperature controlled fermentation the wine is left to age in stainless steel tanks. The wine is free from any malolactic fermentation, acidification or any other form of manipulation.

This wine is for those who love old world style white wines. Its light body, crisp, mineral-driven backbone, and beautiful aromatics make it the perfect seafood wine.
